rome - At least five hikers were killed after they were dragged along by rising water in the south of Italy. The victims were in a ravine in Calabria. Heavy rainfall caused the water to rise in a stream, reports Italian media.

The group would have been surprised by the severe weather. Some people in the gap could allegedly bring themselves to safety. The authorities have deployed a helicopter to bring a child with hypothermia to the hospital.

The gorge at the municipality of Civita is popular among tourists because of the imposing rock formations. It is still unclear how many people were in total in the ravine when the water began to rise. A civil protection spokesperson could not say anything about possible missing persons.
