hamburg - Every year in European waters estimated 25,000 fishing nets correctly. Greenpeace has calculated that annually nets with a total length of 1,250 kilometers left in the sea, a distance of Amsterdam to the border with Belarus.

Within a few days fished divers nature organization networks with a dry weight of several tons from the North Sea. Greenpeace called Friday for cleaning up the nets. The gear disappears both accidentally and deliberately into the water. The remaining nets pose a danger to fish and other aquatic animals.

Greenpeace urges EU Member States to abide by its own rules, which stipulate that fishermen or their country of origin their lost nets have mountains themselves. Each year disappears around 13 million tonnes of plastic waste in the sea and 10 percent of them is fishing gear. Precisely fisheries will benefit from a clean sea, said Greenpeace.
