Famine in parts of southern Sudan

World February 20, 2017 11:09

juba - Parts of Southern Sudan ravaged by war hit by famine. This means that all people are dying of starvation. In a few months threatens nearly half of the population, 5.5 million people, have no secure access to more affordable food, say the government and three organizations of the United Nations.

'Barrier-free humanitarian access' to anyone who is threatened by hunger is urgently needed to avoid a catastrophe, says UNICEF, the United Nations Children.

The oil-rich and relatively fertile Southern Sudan is in a civil war since 2013, causing more than 3 million people have been forced to flee the country. By acts of war and economic dislocation agricultural production remains and can be difficult distributed food and relief items.

'This famine has been created by human hands,' said Joyce Luma from the World Food Programme (WFP). The impact of humanitarian aid is limited, especially when there is no peace and no security for those who provide assistance or need assistance.
