- The Premier League's new semi-automated offside technology is set to debut in the FA Cup, promising quicker and more accurate offside decisions.
Introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology in FA Cup
The Premier League has tested artificial intelligence-based semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) for two years and is now ready to implement it in the FA Cup. SAOT, developed by Genius Sports, aims to address the delays, inaccuracies, and lack of confidence associated with the current VAR offside system.
How SAOT Works
SAOT utilizes 30 bespoke cameras placed in stadium roofs to track the ball and all players, recording detailed data points per player to determine their exact position. This data is processed in real-time, triggering alerts to the VAR for offside decisions. SAOT automates the mapping process, providing quicker results and reducing the average review time by 30 seconds.
Advantages of SAOT
SAOT eliminates human error and operator bias, increasing confidence in decision-making. By moving the process from manual to automated, SAOT aims to provide a more efficient and accurate offside technology solution. The technology's 3D visualization will offer fans an enhanced viewing experience, making offside decisions clearer and easier to understand.
Implementation and Future Plans
The Premier League plans to introduce semi-automated VAR offside technology in the 2024-25 season. While delays may still occur in subjective decisions, SAOT is expected to streamline the offside review process and enhance overall match officiating.
