Ex-dictator Rios Montt died

guatemala city - The former dictator of Guatemala, Efrain Rios Montt, died on Sunday at the age of 91. That is what his lawyer Luis Rosales has announced.

Rios Montt was in power for almost a year and a half after a military coup in 1982 and 1983, when the Central American country experienced the bloodiest period in its civil war (1960-1996). He was held responsible for 70,000 deaths and disappearances.

In 2013 Rios Montt received eighty years in prison for genocide and crimes against humanity. That statement was reversed a week and a half later due to procedural errors. Until a new conviction of Rios Montt it was no longer, partly due to his dementia.
