World July 3, 2018 18:30

são paulo - A Brazilian court sentenced the former businessman and billionaire Eike Batista to thirty years in prison for bribery. The former mining and oil magnate has, according to the court, the then governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral, converted 15.5 million euro bribes paid.

In exchange for the bribes, Batista's companies acquired contracts with the state. Cabral has been in prison since the end of 2016. Batista was six years ago the richest man in the country and one of the richest people in the world. Meanwhile, the lion's share of his assets is gone. In 2015, Batista even got the nickname 'billionaire in the min', because he would already have a billion dollars debt.

Batista's accusation and condemnation is the latest result in the Brazilian wave of corruption investigations, forcing dozens of powerful businessmen and politicians to prison sentences.
