europe - European Union gears up for potential crises in the wake of Donald Trump's return to the White House.

EU Prepares for Potential Challenges

The European Union is bracing for a second term of Donald Trump, taking into account the possibility of new crises. Despite past tensions, EU is seeking a pragmatic approach for a balanced relationship with Washington. Trump's provocative remarks in his first term left a lasting impact on the EU, hinting at the likelihood of another stormy period.

Although EU Council President Donald Tusk urged to 'stand tall and remain strong,' the situation on the ground is quite complex. Divided by internal conflicts and facing a turbulent global scenario, EU countries are aligning differently towards the new American administration. While France and Spain opt for a firm stance, Germany leans towards a calmer approach, with several EU nations supporting Berlin's position. Italy and Hungary appear closer to Trump than the EU, creating a diverse environment for Brussels' diplomatic efforts.

EU's primary goal is to prevent a potential trade war with the US. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo warned that such conflict would benefit China, emphasizing the need for strategic dialogue over aggressive actions. In an attempt to appease Trump, EU is considering increasing gas and oil imports from the US. Concerns also arise regarding Trump's policies in Ukraine and the possibility of unsettling NATO with unexpected decisions.

As NATO prepares for Trump's return, member states face a test with defense expenditures. Trump's call to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP poses a challenge for many allies. While the 2% target seems insufficient in the current security landscape, reaching 5% appears to be an unrealistic demand. Evaluations suggest that Trump may use the 5% proposal as a bargaining chip, aiming to push the existing target higher. Previous discussions on a 4% threshold did not materialize, highlighting uncertainties surrounding future defense commitments.
