'EU must intervene if Madrid takes over power'

london - 'The European Union loses its credibility if it allows the Spanish government to take over the administration of Catalonia in Madrid,' spokesman Javier Raul Romeva, spokesman for the Spanish state, told the British Broadcaster BBC.

'Only the Catalan people have the right to intervene in regional institutions,' Romeva says. He also promises in the interview that 'the Catalan people will not pick these measures from Madrid.'

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, in turn, said in an interview that Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont immediately loses his power when the Senate approves the activation of Article 155 of the Constitution. Which states that Madrid can take over the administration in a region when leaders go against the public interest.

It is expected that the Spanish Senate will take a decision on the acquisition of the Catalonia Board on Friday.
