washington - Ethel Kennedy, the widow of the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy who was assassinated in 1968, has passed away at the age of 96.

Ethel Kennedy, the widow of the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, has passed away. Her grandson Joe Kennedy III announced the news. Ethel, who was 96, died from a stroke, according to Joe Kennedy III. Joe Kennedy III wrote, "In addition to her lifelong work for social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind 9 children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren." She outlived two of her children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

In 1950, Ethel married Robert F. Kennedy. He was a prominent figure within the Democratic Party and was seeking the presidency when he was assassinated. She was also the sister-in-law of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who was also assassinated in 1963.

Mrs. Kennedy never remarried and dedicated her life to raising her children, preserving the memory of her husband, and advocating for causes he cared deeply about," writes The New York Times. Although she never held an official position, Ethel used her name and connections to fight for social justice. In 2014, she was awarded the prestigious Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

One of Ethel's eleven children is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had run as an independent candidate in the presidential race. He publicly endorsed Republican Donald Trump at the end of August, a decision that some of his siblings have distanced themselves from.
