vatican city - Turkish president Erdogan visits Pope Francis on Monday. The Turkish leader stepped out of a car on a deserted St. Peter's Square. Surrounding streets were closed for safety reasons.

Erdogan said shortly before his departure from Turkey to discuss the necessary things with the church prince. 'We will talk about Palestine, Jerusalem, Syria, Iraq, fighting terrorism, refugee issues and humanitarian aid,' said the president according to state press agency Anadolu.

Erdogan's visit is expected to be accompanied by demonstrations in Rome. Among other things, demonstrators want to make clear their dissatisfaction about the human rights situation in Turkey. The authorities in the Italian capital deployed about 3,500 troops to ensure safety.
