istanbul - Kurdish militias in northwestern Syria will be destroyed by Turkish military intervention in the area. With this, Turkish president Erdogan threatened Saturday.
He refers to the Syrian-Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) that dominate the area of Afrin. Afrin is located in the Idlib province, almost 50 kilometers northwest of Aleppo and 25 kilometers from the Turkish border. Idlib is largely in the hands of rebels fighting against the Syrian government of President Assad.
Turkish troops invaded Idlib three months ago in consultation with Russia and Iran supporting Assad. It is intended that the fighting between Assad's troops and the predominantly jihadist rebels in Idlib will stop. But Turkish troops are now facing Kurdish fighters. They reported from Afrin on Saturday that they were attacked by Turkish artillery.
