The incident took place during an environmental protest aiming to stop the construction of a dam that would lead to the destruction of Sivens Forest in southern France. In October 2014, a tear gas canister used by the police in an attack caused the death of Remi Fraisse.

Following the environmental protests that led to the activist's death, the local council of Tarn region suspended the construction of the dam. The investigation confirmed that the young activist died as a result of the tear gas canister thrown by the police.
