Soccer's Longest Penalty Shootout Record Smashed in 2024

In a historic match in May 2024, F.C. Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv set a world record for the longest penalty shootout in soccer history, with an incredible 56 shots taken.

Setting the Record

The record-breaking shootout occurred in the semifinal of Israel's third-tier Liga Alef South after a 2-2 draw in the postseason playoff match.

Unprecedented Length

Every player had to take at least two penalties, and half of each team's players had to take a third spot kick before Dimona emerged victorious with a 23-22 win over Shimshon.

Previous Records

The previous record of 54 penalties was set in England in March 2022, where Washington defeated Bedlington 25-24 in a first-round match of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup.

The 2025 Apertura final in Liga MX, with 24 spot kicks, pales in comparison to the world record.
