berlin - Elon Musk expressed his support for Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in an opinion piece published in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, sparking controversy.

American tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has shown his support for the radical-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in an opinion piece published in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

In his submission, Musk elaborated on his previous post on X where he stated that "only AfD can save Germany." He said, "Portraying AfD as extreme right-wing is clearly inaccurate, as the party's leader, Alice Weidel, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!"

Shortly after Musk's message appeared online, Eva Marie Kogel, the opinion editor of the newspaper, resigned. Chief editor Jan Philipp Burgard commented on the website regarding the opinion piece: "Musk's diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only AfD can save Germany, is fatally incorrect."

Germans will head to the polls once again on February 23 due to the collapse of the coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz in November. AfD ranks second in the opinion polls, but many parties in Germany have already stated their reluctance to form a coalition with them.
