- Study reveals significant decrease in electric car range during cold weather conditions, impacting consumer confidence.

Electric Cars Performance in Winter

A recent study conducted by the German ANWB showcased a decrease of up to 54% in the range of 25 electric car models tested in a cold environment, raising concerns about battery performance in winter conditions.

The Toyota bZ4X, which is expected to reach 504 kilometers on a full charge, only managed to cover 233 kilometers in cold weather, highlighting the performance gap in real-world conditions compared to WLTP estimates.

Other models such as the Chinese MG 4Er, Volvo EC40, Peugeot 3008, and Tesla 3 also experienced significant reductions in range, with some falling short by over 40% of the promised distance.

On the positive side, the NIO ET5 LR and Porsche Taycan exhibited better performance by losing only 21% and 24% of their range, respectively, in cold weather conditions.

The ADAC emphasizes the importance of informing consumers about the potential range decrease in winter, especially for models with larger batteries that may not meet the advertised distances.

Despite the range limitations, electric cars offer a lower risk of breakdowns compared to conventional vehicles, with only 2.8 out of 1000 electric car owners experiencing roadside issues, significantly lower than the 6.8% rate for traditional cars.
