moscow - Russian former governor Nikita Belig has been sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption on Thursday. A Russian court declared Belig guilty of accepting bribes from a businessman.

Belig has denied. He was governor of the Kirov region, which lies about 800 kilometers northeast of Moscow. Unlike many other high regional directors, Belig was part of the opposition against President Vladimir Putin.

As a governor, he attracted critics from the Kremlin as employees. Aleksej Navalni, the best-known opposition leader in Russia, also worked as a consultant for Belig.
