ecuador - Ecuador gears up for elections amidst rising drug-related violence, focusing on tough measures to tackle crime.

Ecuador's Presidential Elections

Ecuador is heading to the polls again on Sunday, 9th February, following the election of right-wing Daniel Noboa as president fourteen months ago. Noboa assumed office after the center-right Guillermo Lasso resigned, promising a tough stance against escalating violence in the country.

The surge in violence in Ecuador is linked to the influx of foreign drug cartels, including Mexican drug syndicates and the Albanian and Italian mafia, establishing operations in the country. Noboa's administration, facing challenges like gang warfare, prison riots, and increased kidnappings, has been under pressure to address the security concerns.

Noboa initially garnered public support for his strong approach, declaring a state of emergency in Ecuador in January 2024 following outbreaks of violence in major cities. However, his administration faced criticism for human rights violations by military and police forces, exemplified by the abduction and murder of four young boys in Guayaquil.

Ecuador witnessed a significant increase in violent crime during Noboa's term, with 6,962 reported homicides in 2024. Despite a 15% decrease from the previous year, the crime rate surged in January 2025, prompting concerns over public safety. Noboa's security strategy, though facing challenges, aims to combat organized crime effectively.

Amidst economic woes and an energy crisis in 2024, Ecuadorians are also evaluating the candidates' economic policies and leadership capabilities. Noboa's conservative stance contrasts with Luisa Gonzalez's socialist platform, presenting voters with distinct policy approaches.

The upcoming elections are poised to lead to a second round between Noboa and Gonzalez if no candidate secures over fifty percent of the votes in the initial round, scheduled for 13th April.
