las vegas - Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Beljaarts, shares insights on trade prospects with the US as President-elect Donald Trump threatens the EU with a trade war.

Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Beljaarts, is currently on a work visit in the United States amid looming concerns over potential trade disputes with the EU by President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking to reporters, Beljaarts expressed optimism about the future of trade relations between the two economies. He stated, "In every scenario, there are pros and cons. I choose to see the glass half full."

During his week-long visit, Beljaarts is traveling with a delegation of companies across three American states: Arizona, Nevada, and California. These regions hold significant Dutch business interests, including companies like ASML and ASM. Unlike his predecessor, Beljaarts also made a stop in Las Vegas to attend the CES technology fair and receive an innovation award.

When questioned about the potential impact of Trump's trade policies on the Netherlands, Beljaarts remained cautious, emphasizing the need to wait and see the actual outcomes. He mentioned ongoing discussions with the Central Planning Bureau and the Dutch Central Bank to assess the effects of possible measures, noting that changes in tariffs could influence the value of the dollar and potentially benefit Dutch exports to the US.

Regarding the EU's stance on trade negotiations with the US, Beljaarts acknowledged the collaborative efforts with Minister Klever of Foreign Trade and EU officials. While recognizing the EU's role in such discussions, he highlighted his responsibility in promoting Dutch businesses like ASML and ASM within the EU framework.

Despite concerns over Trump's economic agenda, Beljaarts maintained a positive outlook on the relationship between the Netherlands and the US. He stressed the importance of continued investment in bilateral ties, particularly in areas like foreign relations and defense.

Addressing his prior interactions with Trump's team since September, Beljaarts emphasized the significance of building personal relationships and understanding each other's motivations to achieve mutual benefits. He underscored the value of engaging with both Democrats and Republicans to establish a solid foundation for future cooperation.

Overall, Beljaarts expressed a commitment to fostering strong ties with the incoming US administration, emphasizing the need for ongoing dialogue and relationship-building to navigate potential challenges and opportunities in the evolving transatlantic trade landscape.
