edinet, moldova - A 37-year-old Dutch national has been sentenced to three years in prison, partially suspended, in Moldova following the tragic death of two workers.

Dutch National Convicted in Moldova

A Dutch company manager in Moldova has been sentenced to three years in prison, with part of the sentence suspended, after two workers died due to inhaling toxic gases in a manure pit.

The Dutch national, a manager at a dairy farm, was found guilty of allowing the deceased workers to work in unsafe conditions, according to reports from the Eastern European country.

The court in Edinet, located about 200 kilometers north of the capital Chisinau, ruled that the Dutchman failed to ensure safe working conditions between 2019-2022, did not provide adequate protective equipment to employees, and did not properly assess workplace risks.

The tragedy occurred on June 29, 2022, when the workers fell into a manure pit on the premises of the dairy farm, resulting in their deaths.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court also ordered the Dutch national to pay a compensation of 300,000 lei (approximately 15,000 euros) to the families of the victims. The defendant has the option to appeal the verdict.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Edinet emphasized the importance of complying with safety regulations in the workplace and the responsibility of employers to protect the well-being of their employees.
