lusaka - A drunken police officer in Zambia released prisoners on New Year's Eve and then disappeared himself, leaving thirteen escaped criminals behind. The officer has been arrested and is facing consequences for his actions.

A drunken police officer in Zambia, identified as Titus Phiri, released prisoners from their cells on New Year's Eve and disappeared himself. The thirteen escaped criminals are currently being searched for, as reported by the BBC.

The officer, who was under the influence of alcohol, was later arrested and detained in a cell. He was on duty at the Leonard Cheelo police station in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia with a population of two million.

According to a spokesperson, the officer forcibly took the keys to the cells from another officer on New Year's Eve, opening both male and female sections and announcing that the prisoners were free to enter the new year.

A total of fifteen suspects had their cells unlocked, with thirteen of them fleeing the scene and currently evading capture.
