In the night from Saturday to Sunday, there was significant unrest at Binnenwegplein in Rotterdam as reported by the Rotterdam police. The area was 'very crowded' due to a discount promotion by Mediamarkt, which attracted hundreds of people. Fireworks were set off and several windows of the store were broken.
Multiple police units were present to control the situation. Several individuals were detained.
In a press release, Mediamarkt stated that they had to cancel the promotion due to the large crowd and the presence of individuals with 'wrong intentions' just before the store was scheduled to open. In consultation with the police, Mediamarkt decided to call off the promotion.
