Deadly Stabbing Attack in Mulhouse

In the French city of Mulhouse, near the German border, a man carried out a stabbing attack, leaving one person dead and five others injured, according to local media including news site L'Alsace. French President Emmanuel Macron has characterized it as 'a terrorist attack'.

The victims include two parking wardens and three police officers. One officer was struck in the carotid artery, while another was hit in the chest. Three other officers reportedly sustained minor injuries. The assailant allegedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack, which took place shortly before 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Local reports indicate that the 37-year-old perpetrator has been apprehended. The area has been cordoned off by the police. According to news agency AFP, the suspect in the knife attack is on a counterterrorism watchlist, having been previously convicted for promoting terrorism.

French President Emmanuel Macron referred to the incident as a 'terrorist act' of 'Islamist nature,' stating that there is 'no doubt' about it. Macron also mentioned that Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who is heading to Mulhouse, will provide further details about the attack later on Saturday. He added, 'My government is determined to eradicate terrorism on our territory.'
