india, nepal - At least 69 people perish due to lightning strikes in Bihar, India, and Nepal. Climate change linked to the surge in fatalities.

Lightning Strikes Claim Lives in India and Nepal

Dozens killed in Bihar, India, and Nepal as reported by local authorities. The death toll rises to at least 69 in the region due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

61 fatalities were reported in Bihar on Thursday and Friday, with an additional 8 deaths in Nepal since Wednesday.

Climate experts attribute the increasing fatalities to climate change, noting a worrisome rise in deadly lightning strikes in India, with nearly 1,900 deaths nationwide last year.

A study by Fakir Mohan University in Orissa reveals that lightning has claimed 101,309 lives in India from 1967 to 2020, with a significant increase in fatalities since 2010.
