Dangerous Increase in Cancer Cases

World Health Organization Warns of Rising Cancer Cases
The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed an increase in lung cancer cases among individuals who have never smoked, citing air pollution as the primary factor. The WHO's Cancer Research Agency stated that globally, lung cancer in non-smokers is estimated to be the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths.
One of Four Cancer Subtypes
A recent report highlighted that in non-smokers, lung cancer mainly manifests as 'adenocarcinoma,' a cancer subtype originating from the body's mucus-secreting cells. According to the findings, 'adenocarcinoma,' one of the four main subtypes of lung cancer, accounted for 45.6% of global lung cancer cases in men and 59.7% in women in 2022. The incidence of 'adenocarcinoma' lung cancer cases among individuals who have never smoked was found to be 70%.
The Impact of Air Pollution
The study emphasized that 'air pollution is a significant factor explaining the increase in lung cancer cases among individuals who have never smoked worldwide.' Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Scientists are striving to determine what causes lung cancer beyond smoking. Dr. Freddie Bray from the Cancer Research Agency stated in an interview with The Guardian, 'In cases where smoking is not considered the primary cause of lung cancer, further research is needed to identify possible factors such as air pollution.'
