sissonville - A couple in West Virginia sentenced to life in prison for treating adopted black children as slaves. Details on the case and verdict.

Couple Sentenced to Over 100 Years for Abusing Adopted Children

A couple in West Virginia, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather (63) and Donald Lantz (64), received life sentences for mistreating their five adopted black children. The children were found in a poor state in a shed in Sissonville.

Case Details

  • Children were adopted from a shelter for homeless and vulnerable youth.
  • Two children aged 11 and 16 were discovered first, followed by three more aged 6, 9, and 11.
  • Children were neglected, forced to sleep on a concrete floor, and were found in distress.

Legal Proceedings

Accused of racism, the couple allegedly selected children based on skin color. The judge condemned their actions as treating the children as literal slaves. Whitefeather sentenced to 215 years, Lantz to 160 years in prison.
