montgomery, alabama - Demetrius Frazier, convicted of rape and murder, was executed in Alabama using nitrogen asphyxiation method.

Execution by Nitrogen Asphyxiation

Demetrius Frazier, 52, convicted in 1996 for the rape and murder of Pauline Brown, was executed in Alabama using nitrogen asphyxiation. The jury voted ten to two in favor of the death penalty. Frazier had a prior conviction for the murder of a 14-year-old girl in Michigan for which he received a life sentence.

Alabama, the only state currently using nitrogen asphyxiation for executions, performed three executions using this method last year. The process involves pumping nitrogen into a face mask, causing the inmate to suffocate.
