Conclave Begins in Sixtine Chapel to Elect New Pope
The process of selecting a new pope has officially started in the Vatican City, with cardinals convening in the Sixtine Chapel for prayer and voting.
Selection Process
Cardinals first gathered at the Cappella Paolina in the Apostolic Palace for prayer before proceeding in a procession to the Sixtine Chapel. They took an oath upon entry, followed by the voting process where they write 'Eligo in Summum Pontificem' on a ballot to indicate their choice.
After all cardinals have voted, the ballots are counted, and if a pope is chosen, the ballots are burned. Black smoke indicates no decision, while white smoke with church bells signals a successful election with at least 89 votes.
Expected Duration
Multiple rounds of voting are anticipated, with a maximum of four votes per day. The burning of ballots will occur at most twice daily until a new pope is elected.
