peking - The strange case of a Chinese actor who was lured to Thailand and held captive by a Myanmar mafia exposes a telecom fraud network.

Chinese Actor Lured to Thailand

22-year-old Wang Xing was tricked into a 'acting job' in Thailand offered via WeChat, only to be taken to the Myanmar border by Myanmarese mafias instead. He was among over 50 people held captive and forced into telecom fraud training. After his rescue, questions arise about other missing persons in similar circumstances.

Telecom Fraud Crackdown

Chinese and Thai authorities arrested twelve suspects linked to the network responsible for Wang's abduction. China vows to crack down hard on cross-border telecom fraud, with reports of over 50,000 Chinese citizens involved in online fraud cases in Myanmar since 2023.

International Cooperation

China, Myanmar, and Thailand signed a deal to dismantle criminal networks engaged in such activities. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urges Southeast Asian countries to take decisive actions against online scams. Concerns rise in Thailand over Chinese tourism following the incident, as tourists cancel bookings amid safety fears.
