santiago de chile - Chile was the first country in Latin America to ban the issuance of plastic bags by shops on Friday. In the case of supermarket chains, plastic bags must have disappeared within six months; for smaller shops, a transitional arrangement of two years applies.
'We are taking a big step towards a clean Chile,' said President Sebastián Piñera, who says that 3.4 billion plastic bags are used every year by Chileans, many of whom end up in the Pacific.
