cupertino - Apple users will soon be able to contact more things with their iPhone. Opening a door, for example, or checking in public transport. Apple wants to give developers more access to the NFC chip in the devices, so they can make new applications.

According to the tech site The Information, Apple will announce the new possibilities next month. The applications must be included in iOS 12, the new version of operating system iOS. The technology is already being tested at the futuristic headquarters of Apple.

The NFC chips are included in the iPhones 6 and 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus, 7 and 7 Plus, 8 and 8 Plus, SE and X. Users can pay with Apple Pay at cash registers thanks to the chips.

NFC stands for near near-field communication. It is the system behind contactless payment with smartphones, debit cards and OV chip cards. It was developed in 2002 by Sony and the Dutch NXP.
