Capri Island Takes Measures to Limit Mass Tourism in Italy
capri, italy - Capri, the popular Italian island off the coast of Naples, is looking to reduce the number of tourists it receives by limiting ferry arrivals.
In the high season, ferries currently arrive at the crowded island in the Mediterranean Sea every ten minutes. However, the final decision on abolishing this rule, which has been in effect since 1990, is still pending. Discussions are underway to ensure at least a 20-minute gap between arrivals in the future to reduce congestion in the port.
Capri is one of Italy's most popular destinations. With less than 15,000 permanent residents, the island attracts tens of thousands of visitors per day during the peak season. Even last weekend, long after the main tourist season ended, more than 30,000 tourists were counted. Last year, a total of over 2.7 million people visited the island.
Several Italian holiday destinations have been struggling with complaints about excessive tourism. Venice attempted to tackle this by introducing a fee for day trippers. In the historic center of Florence, the city council is cracking down on apartment rentals through platforms like Airbnb.
