Cannes Film Festival launches abuse helpline

World April 27, 2018 16:27

- In collaboration with the French secretary of state Marlene Schiappa, the Cannes Film Festival establishes a telephone line for reporting sexual abuse. That reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The telephone line can be used to report sexual abuse, but also other forms of intimidation or abuse. The film festival has not provided any further text and explanation. 'We set up this telephone line to prevent sexual abuse,' Schiappa told the French news agency AFP.

Schiappa has been the French secretary of state for equality between men and women since last year. 'One of the rapes by Harvey Weinstein took place in Cannes, so that's why the film festival has to do something', says the politician.

Schiappa refers to the story of actress Asia Argento. She confessed that Weinstein raped her in the past, when she was 21, in the famous Hotel du Cap at Cap d'Antibes, just outside Cannes.

The Cannes Film Festival starts on 8 May and lasts until 19 May.
