mexico city - In the run-up to the elections that are taking place this summer in Mexico, about thirty people were killed who wanted to stand for election. That said the Minister of the Interior Alfonso Navarrete Monday.

In July, the country will include the president, parliamentarians, various mayors and regional members of parliament. Especially candidates for those last two jobs had to pay for it according to Navarrete. Most violent incidents took place in the southwestern state of Guerrero.

Criminal gangs in Mexico try to influence politics mainly at local level. The country has long suffered from a wave of violence. With 29,000 murders in 2017, that was the bloodiest year in the last two decades.
