Italian Village Offers Houses for 1 Euro

Italian village Penne in Abruzzo region continues selling homes for 1 euro to prevent becoming a ghost town due to depopulation.

Depopulation Challenge

  • Kleine Italian villages struggle with empty homes, prompting local governments to sell properties at very low prices.

Preservation Efforts

  • Penne started the project in 2022, already selling six houses for the price of a coffee, aiming to attract new residents and revitalize the historic center.

Renovation Requirement

  • Buyers commit to renovating the houses within three years with no upfront guarantee, supported by the municipality providing architectural and renovation assistance.

Penalized for renovation costs estimated at around 20,000 euros for small to medium-sized houses, the initiative aims to rejuvenate the old neighborhood.
