berlin, germany - BSW's failure to reach the German electoral threshold paves the way for a coalition between CDU/CSU and SPD.

Election Results Declared

The election results were finalized by the federal electoral commission on Sunday night after counting the votes from all electoral districts. CDU leader and expected new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, expressed his intention to form a new German government before Easter. It is likely that he will form a coalition with the SPD.

Prior to the final results, there was uncertainty about whether CDU/CSU and SPD could form a coalition together. If the new party BSW, a splinter from Die Linke, had met the 5 percent electoral threshold, an additional party would have been needed due to the seat distribution. However, BSW narrowly missed that threshold, securing 4.97 percent of the votes.

The liberal FDP also fell short of the electoral threshold, receiving 4.33 percent of the votes.
