london - The British writer Anita Brookner is deceased. She was 87 years, British media reported Monday. She won unexpectedly in 1984, the Booker Prize, an annual award of 50,000 pounds (nearly 65,000 euros) for the novel Hotel du Lac. In total she wrote 24 books.

Besides novelist was Brookner art historian. She was the first female professor who was the senior rank professor at the University of Cambridge. She only started writing when she was in her fifties.

Brookner was born in 1928 in London. She was a child of Jewish immigrants from Poland. Because of her background she often felt an outsider in British society. This was a source of inspiration for her novels, which often were about loneliness.
