A British mother has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for extreme neglect of her child, as she admitted to abuse in court. The mother, who claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy until giving birth in March 2020, did not seek medical help for the baby, who was born with a cleft lip and palate. Allegedly, she wanted to hide the baby from the child's father.

The mother confessed to leaving the child alone at home frequently, while her partner, unaware of the child's existence, was forbidden from going upstairs where the baby was kept. Loud music was played in the house to mask the baby's cries. When the partner discovered the toddler at home one day, he alerted authorities, leading to the rescue of the severely malnourished child, who is now in foster care.
