Investigation into Long-Unsolved 'Alps Murders'
After twelve years, a potential breakthrough emerges in the unsolved murder case of a British family vacationing in the French Alps. Investigators are now following the trail of a Swiss special forces soldier who is believed to have gone rogue, targeting random victims.
Various theories, including involvement of a criminal gang or a psychopath, have been explored in the past. The victims, Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli, were brutally killed alongside Iqbal's mother and a local cyclist, using a Luger PO6 pistol linked to the Swiss military.
On the tragic day of September 5, 2012, the al-Hilli family, consisting of Saad, Iqbal, their two daughters, and Iqbal's mother, were picnicking near Chevaline when they were ambushed. The bodies of the victims were found with multiple gunshot wounds, while Saad's eldest daughter, Zainab, survived with serious injuries.
The cold case team in Paris has taken over the investigation and is now focusing on the possibility of a Swiss elite soldier being responsible for the heinous crime. The use of specific operational techniques and the type of weapon used point towards military training.
Despite the passage of almost thirteen years, the perpetrator remains at large. However, recent efforts have narrowed down the search area, with authorities seeking assistance from the Swiss Defense to identify any former elite soldiers who may have been involved in the incident.
