sydney - Man walks hundred days with new type artificial heart, potential replacement for human heart, BiVACOR implant success.

BiVACOR Artificial Heart Implant Success

BiVACOR's artificial heart, invented by Dr. Daniel Timms, is a groundbreaking implantable rotating blood pump, aiming to support blood flow naturally and potentially replace a human heart. The Australian government has allocated around thirty million euros for heart research.

The implant currently serves as a temporary bridge function until a donor heart transplant is possible, with hopes of eliminating the need for it in the future.

The innovative implant is still in the early stages of research. A man in his forties, as the fifth volunteer, successfully underwent the procedure and has since received a real heart after months of carrying the artificial heart.

Research on artificial hearts has advanced in the last decade due to wireless technology and new biomaterials. In 2021, UMC Utrecht implanted a fully artificial heart in a 54-year-old man with severe heart failure, equipped with pumps, valves, sensors, electronics, and integrated software.

Dutch internist Willem Kolff pioneered heart technology in 1956 by creating the first heart-lung machine, followed by the first artificial heart a year later.
