tel aviv - Deal between Israel and Hamas brings hope for Gaza hostages after a year of negotiation, with Trump and Netanyahu playing key roles.

Deal Brokered Amid Pressure

After a year of negotiation, a deal between Israel and Hamas has finally been reached, bringing hope for the Gaza hostages. The families of the remaining Israeli hostages experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, awaiting confirmation of the agreement announced by Qatar. The pressure from Donald Trump and his envoy, Steve Witkoff, on both Hamas and Benjamin Netanyahu played a crucial role in the deal's realization.

Trump's warnings of dire consequences if the hostages were not released by a certain deadline intensified the negotiations. Hamas, under pressure from mediators in Qatar and Egypt, agreed to a significant concession by dropping their demand for the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza before any hostages were released. Meanwhile, Netanyahu, urged by Trump through Witkoff, made rare concessions in order to meet the deal deadline before the US presidential inauguration.

With the involvement of key figures like Brett McGurk, Israel and Hamas engaged in a week of negotiations, with both delegations staying in the same hotel in Qatar albeit on different floors. The shuttle diplomacy, which had previously faltered, gained momentum following recent developments in the Middle East that isolated Hamas further. Trump's election victory and Netanyahu's domestic pressures also influenced the successful outcome, paving the way for a potential breakthrough in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
