Bread riots after doubling prices

khartoem - In case of protests against the high bread prices in Sudan, a student was killed Sunday. Six others were injured. A prominent opposition leader was also arrested.

In the whole country protests broke out this weekend after the prices of bread had doubled. At the end of last year, the government announced that it would stop subsidies on foodstuffs in 2018 as austerity measure. The country is struggling with an inflation rate of around 25 percent.

The authorities arrested Omar Al-Dageir, the leader of one of the largest opposition groups in the country. In addition, the sale was banned from six newspapers that had critically reported on government policy and the related price increases.

Austerity measures in Sudan have led to demonstrations with some regularity in recent years. According to human rights organization Amnesty International, in 2013, 185 people were killed in protests against the rise in fuel prices.
