The sparsely populated African country introduced the ban on elephant hunting in 2014. At the moment there are 130,000 elephants, which is equivalent to one elephant on 18 inhabitants. The biggest complaint is that the animals cause damage to the harvest.

The hunting ban has long been a point of discussion between local organizations and defenders of animal rights. The latter are of the opinion that elephants in Botswana are looking for a good escape from the poachers in neighboring countries.
