rome, italy - Italian authorities dismantle a network selling famous paintings online, including works by Picasso and Rembrandt, in a hidden atelier in Rome.

Italian Authorities Crack Down on Art Forgery Ring

In a recent investigation in Italy, a network selling copies of world-renowned paintings online has been dismantled. Among the seized pieces were works by Pablo Picasso and Rembrandt.

The operation led by the Rome prosecutor's office uncovered a hidden atelier where forgeries of famous painters were being produced.

Italian police seized 71 paintings, some completed and some unfinished, along with hundreds of paint tubes, brushes, stencils, canvases, and art catalogues used by fraudsters to sell their fake artworks. The criminals even produced fake certificates to guarantee the 'authenticity' of their forgeries.

The investigation began when the Rome prosecutor's office discovered suspicious paintings bearing the signatures of popular 19th and 20th-century artists on online platforms.

The gang has been copying the works of artists Mario Puccini, Giacomo Balla, and Anna De Weert for some time, but the exact profits made by the art thieves remain unknown.

Italian police had previously dismantled a Europe-wide forgery ring producing copies of works by artists like Banksy, Andy Warhol, and Gustav Klimt a few months ago.
