beijing - The motorist who drove into a crowd in the Chinese city of Hengyang, had a long criminal record and wanted to 'take revenge on society.' This is what the authorities say, who reported eleven deaths and 44 injured.

The driver drove a busy square in the city on Wednesday evening. He then stepped out to attack people with a knife and a shovel. On video images you can see how people are lying lifeless in the square. Others try to bring themselves to safety in a running way.

Chinese media have previously reported that the alleged perpetrator is a 54-year-old man. He could be arrested. The Hengyang authorities say the defendant has been convicted in the past for drug trafficking, theft and violent crimes. That is why, according to the government, he wanted to avenge himself on society.
