About the Blobfish

  • The blobfish, scientifically known as Psychrolutes marcidus, inhabits deep waters off the coasts of New Zealand and Australia.
  • They lack a complete skeletal structure, scales, or muscles, giving them a unique appearance.

Appearance and Recognition

  • Often depicted out of water, on land, blobfish take on a distinctive 'blob' shape, while in water, they appear rounder and less conspicuous.
  • Despite being crowned the 'ugliest animal' in 2013, their population in the wild remains unknown.
