unknown - Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, has been found to reduce the risk of kidney failure in patients with diabetes, adding to the growing list of beneficial effects of this popular drug.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, has been found to reduce the risk of kidney failure in patients with diabetes, according to recent research published in The New England Journal. Endocrinologist Luc Van Gaal explains that over a 3.5-year period, 3500 patients with type 2 diabetes who received a weekly 1 mg dose of semaglutide had a 24% lower risk of developing kidney failure compared to a placebo group. The drug has also been shown to have positive effects on weight loss, heart health, and potential benefits for addiction treatment. Van Gaal attributes these diverse effects to the medication's ability to intervene in various body processes.

Van Gaal cautions against calling semaglutide a "miracle drug," emphasizing the importance of medical caution as the drug, while highly effective, can have side effects such as gastrointestinal issues. Research is ongoing to explore other potential benefits of semaglutide, including a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and potential benefits for individuals with liver conditions.

In the United States, obesity rates have seen a slight decrease for the first time in decades, with experts attributing this trend to the introduction of medications like Wegovy and Ozempic. While there is cautious optimism about these developments, experts stress that there is still a long way to go in addressing obesity rates, which remain high.
