port-au-prince - An armed gang has killed more than a hundred people in a slum in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, mainly targeting women and the elderly. The incident is believed to be a revenge attack by a bend leader blaming voodoo believers for his son's death.

An armed gang carried out a massacre in a slum in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, killing over a hundred people, primarily women and elderly individuals. According to the Committee for Peace and Development, the attack is believed to be an act of revenge by a bend leader who held voodoo believers accountable for his son's death.

The massacre is reported to have taken place on Friday and Saturday in Wharf Jeremie, a part of Cité Soleil, a notorious slum in the capital of Haiti, as stated by the New York Times. The majority of the victims were reported to be women and men over 60 years old, with their bodies mercilessly mutilated and burnt on the streets.

Sources informed the American newspaper that the motive behind the killing spree was the death of the son of bend leader Monel Felix, also known as Micanord. His son had previously died from a mysterious illness. The bend leader subsequently accused the residents of the neighborhood of bewitching his son. He allegedly ordered the punishment of all elderly individuals and voodoo followers.

Voodoo, originally from West Africa, is an officially recognized religion in Haiti. Haiti, forming the Caribbean island of Hispaniola alongside the Dominican Republic, is the poorest country in the Americas continent. For years, it has suffered from the violence of heavily armed gangs that largely control the capital. An international mission, including a police force from Kenya, has had limited success in addressing the situation. In November, two passenger flights of American airlines were even shot at in Port-au-Prince.
