Belgium is looking for a gas guarantee at Wiebes

brussels - Belgium wants guarantees from the Netherlands that the agreements on gas supply are fulfilled now that the extraction is reduced. Minister Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs had this week the Belgian Minister of Energy Marie-Christine Marghem on the line.

'We need to find the best possible solution for security of supply', explains Marghem's spokesman. The aim is for the meeting to be continued on 26 February during a European Council of Ministers on energy. Wiebes' ministry does not want to lose more than that 'the minister is in good consultation with his foreign colleagues to look at possibilities to further accelerate the already agreed phasing out of Gronings gas. '

The Netherlands supplies about 30 percent of the gas that is fired in Belgium. It has previously been agreed that the gas valve will be closed gradually from 2024 and delivery will stop in 2030.

Because more than 1.6 million Belgian households in roughly the middle of Belgium are equipped for the Dutch low calorific gas, the Flemish, Walloon and Brussels governments are preparing adjustments. According to the Fluxys network operator, the conversion must be completed by 2029.

In case of emergency, a factory in Turnhout can be activated to make high-calorific gas from other countries suitable, according to the spokesman.
