Belgian Teens Fined for Smuggling Ant Queens in Kenya
Two Belgian teenagers, David L. and Seppe L. from Mol, have been sentenced to pay a one million Kenyan shilling fine (approximately €7000) for smuggling 5000 ant queens in Kenya, according to a Kenyan court ruling.
Ant Smuggling Incident
The 19-year-old David and 18-year-old Seppe were arrested on suspicion of ant smuggling on April 5th. The police found 2440 test tubes filled with ants in their hostel room near Lake Naivasha, including 5000 African harvest ant queens, known for their intricate tunnel systems and group behavior.
Legal Proceedings
The teenagers claimed they never intended to illegally export the ants but were offered to buy them during their trip in Kenya, along with export documents. They admitted naivety and were caught by the police before the papers arrived.
Significance of the Case
This case marks the first ant smuggling trial in Kenya, highlighted by the Kenyan Wildlife Service as a milestone in combating biopiracy and illegal trade of live ants. The authorities emphasized the threat of ant theft to food security due to their disruption of vital processes like soil aeration and seed dispersal.
