brussels - Because of the deadly shooting in Liège, the National Security Council of Belgium meets Tuesday afternoon, the body that determines and coordinates the intelligence and security policy. The federal crisis center indicated earlier that the threat level remains at 2, on a scale of 4.

The Public Prosecution Service is investigating whether there was a terrorist attack. The federal prosecutor has taken over the investigation and will give a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday at 10.30 am. The Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security Dick Schoof says he is in contact with the Belgian authorities.

The deliberation in Brussels starts at 16.30 and is chaired by Prime Minister Charles Michel, who is then back from a visit to the scene of the disaster. He accompanied the king there with some ministers. In addition to the main ministers, the top of the intelligence services, the police, the Public Prosecutor and the OCAD anti-terrorist organ are represented in the National Security Council.

In the Walloon city south of Maastricht, two female cops and one male passer-by were shot in the morning. The shooter was killed by a police bullet after he had taken a woman hostage in a nearby school. Possibly the man was radicalized in prison. The 36-year-old Benjamin H. from Rochefort was stuck for relatively minor offenses and was allowed to leave for a short leave on Monday.
